Harry S Truman's middle initial did not stand for a name but was a compromise to honor both his grandfathers Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young. Born in 1884, his parents wanted to avoid favoritism and simply gave him the S in the middle. Truman’s signature sometimes included a period, but in 1962 he declared that the period should be omitted since the S was not an abbreviation.
