Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) or “circulating DNA” are tiny pieces of DNA that moves freely in the bloodstream, released by cells as they die. It can come from healthy cells, tumors, or, during pregnancy, from the placenta. We can look at circulating DNA through blood tests to check for diseases like cancer or to monitor a baby’s health in the womb. The test, called non-invasive prenatal screening or testing (NIPT or NIPS), looks at tiny pieces of DNA in the mom’s blood to check for specific differences
