TALLAHASSEE, Florida - Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Aug. 12 named state Sen. Jay Collins, R-Tampa, as Florida's next lieutenant governor, ending a six-month vacancy in the position.

Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed State Senator Jay Collins from the Tampa area as Florida’s new lieutenant governor.

The appointment is one of DeSantis’ most closely watched moves as he heads into his final two years in office.

Collins told the Phoenix in May that if DeSantis were to appoint him to serve as lieutenant governor, it would be “an honor” and that he’d be happy to do it.
