Hall of Fame thoroughbred trainer D. Wayne Lukas, 89, has returned home under hospice care after a hospitalization in Louisville, according to a statement from his family this past weekend. A towering figure in horse racing for more than four decades, Lukas will not return to training.

The Hall of Famer, who has entered hospice at 89, won so many big races with so many horses that it’s hard to identify him with just one.

The news about the hospitalization and retirement of D. Wayne Lukas came without warning. Lukas, 89, is at home after being hospitalized in Louisville. A severe MRSA blood infection caused significant damage to his heart, digestive system and worsened preexisting chronic conditions, according to a statement from the Lukas family.
