LA protests live updates: Curfew in effect for parts of downtown Los Angeles
The curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tensions are escalating for a fifth day in Los Angeles after protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement gripped the city, with demonstrators clashing with law enforcement and setting vehicles on fire downtown. President Donald Trump has deployed 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to LA. But California Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta are suing the Trump administration, saying they unlawfully "trampled over" California’s sovereignty when they federalized the California National Guard. Across the country, marchers similarly took to the streets in New York City in an anti-ICE protest that began in Foley Square, across from where immigration enforcement operations have been centered. Protests have have also been seen in San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and more. During a video address on Tuesday night, California Gov. Gavin Newsom continued to condemn President Donald Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, saying Trump "chose theatrics over public safety." The governor said the effects of that action and the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration are being felt not just in California, but across the nation. Addressing ICE raids, the governor said that the administration is pushing mass deportations and "indiscriminately targeting hardworking immigrant families regardless of their roots or risk." Jun 10, 2025, 9:38 PM EDT 23 businesses looted in LA, with estimated millions in damage During the press conference on Tuesday, Los Angeles officials said 23 businesses were looted overnight, causing damage that is estimated to be in the millions. The damage was one of the factors that went into the curfew being put in place, Mayor Karen Bass said. "Clearly, after the violence that took place last night -- 23 businesses looted -- and just the extensive widespread nature of the vandalism, we reached a tipping point," she said. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell shared an update on protest arrests on Tuesday evening, saying there were 197 people detained in the downtown area. "Let me be clear that this behavior, blocking freeways, city streets and on ramps, refusing to comply with lawful dispersal orders and interfering with public safety operations, is dangerous, unlawful and won't be tolerated," McDonnell said. Downtown Los Angeles curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced that a curfew will be in effect for protest-impacted parts of downtown Los Angeles beginning Tuesday night. The curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, the mayor said during a press conference. Bass said the curfew, which spans one-square mile in the downtown area, will likely be in place for multiple nights. "Law enforcement will arrest individuals who break the curfew, and you will be prosecuted," the mayor said.
