SEOUL and LONDON -- The South Korean military began dismantling loudspeakers that had been placed along its border with North Korea, South Korea's Defense Ministry said.

In its first comment on President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea, North Korea dismissed a call for dialogue, dampening hopes of a new chapter in relations.

As of Monday, North Korea had yet to respond by removing its own front-line loudspeakers. Newsweek reached out to the North Korean Foreign Ministry for comment. South Korea's move comes 14 months after speakers along the border were reactivated to broadcast K-pop music and anti-North Korean rhetoric.
