The location of Trump's immigrant detention center has a painful history of incarceration, abuse, and private interests.
On July 16, days after the first media investigations about sparse criminal backgrounds among the population were published, Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., characterized the migrants at Alligator Alcatraz as "military-age males, and a lot of them have criminal records."
“We didn’t get a chance to speak,” Donalds said, noting that DeSantis toured the facility with President Donald Trump ahead of a roundtable event. And after that event, there was a rush to leave as bad weather descended on the tented facility.
The camp was first announced by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who is DeSantis’ former chief of staff and was manager of the governor’s unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, late last month.
Potential effects include increased light and air pollution, habitat degradation for endangered species such as the Florida panther, and waste spills.
