The arrested man identified himself as a combat veteran and said he was burning the American flag in protest of an executive order Trump signed Monday targeting flag burning.

A flag was burned across from the White House Monday evening to protest President Donald Trump’s executive order that appeared to outlaw flag burning.

Justice John Paul Stevens, a liberal who was the fourth dissenter, wrote separately. The former Navy officer who earned a Bronze Star during World War II, said that even if prior court rulings could shield flag burning as symbolic speech, “this case has an intangible dimension that makes those rules inapplicable.”
