O’Neill’s spell as interim boss came to an end after a1-0 win over Dundee on Wednesday evening as Wilfried Nancy takes permanent charge
The message was clear: the transition from O’Neill to Nancy would be calm, respectful and purposeful, but it would also begin right away. With Hearts visiting Celtic Park on Sunday and the league table now level at the top, he recognised the urgency of giving players clarity and connection from day one.
Martin O'Neill's final match as caretaker Celtic boss ended with a comfortable 1-0 win over Dundee. The Northern Irish boss will be replaced by Wilfried Nancy who was named as the club's new permanent head coach on Wednesday after signing a two-and-a-half year contract at Parkhead.
Celtic have confirmed the appointment of Wilfried Nancy as manager from Major League Soccer (MLS) club Columbus Crew. Nancy has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Scottish Premiership side, who have been without a permanent head coach since Brendan Rodgers resigned on October 27.
Nancy can see that Celtic are already playing with more belief. The shape O’Neill used, the messages he drilled in over eight games and the spirit he brought back to the dressing room matter more just now than throwing a new system at the players days before a huge league game.
Celtic’s CEO Michael Nicholson and CFO Chris McKay met Nancy at the front door before heading up stairs towards the Celtic manager’s office, that was vacated by Brendan Rodgers after two and a half years at the end of October following back-to-back Scottish Premiership defeats against Dundee and Hearts.
