A smoke advisory for a broad swath of Southern California was extended into Thursday night due to brush fires in Los Angeles and Riverside counties. The Sandy Fire in Simi Valley and the Bain and Verona fires in Riverside County have resulted in diminished air quality this week for several counties.
The Morro Fire in Bonsall, San Diego County, started around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday and is currently 2 acres in size.
In the early stages of fire season, nearly 41,000 acres have burned across the state, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. But that’s well above the five-year average of 23,380 acres burned by this date and could be a harbinger of what’s to come in the state and across the West.
Wildfires have started from glass bottles, gender reveal explosives, target shooting, vehicle sparks and other unusual ignition sources.
