A Simi Valley homeowner whose house was destroyed in the Sandy Fire says a doorbell camera alert helped save his wife's life Monday.

One structure has been destroyed by the fire, officials said. Nearly 900 firefighters were on hand battling the blaze.

Shortly before a brush fire was first reported on the south side of Simi Valley, the Police Department received a phone call. It came from a man in the 2600 block of Rudolph Drive at about 10:15 a.m.
