Hurricane Melissa weakened on Wednesday as it barreled through the Bahamas after devastating Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti, leaving dozens of people dead and destroying infrastructure across the region.

Melissa began affecting the southeastern Bahamas on Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Hurricane Melissa brought devastation and death to the Caribbean as it tore through the region as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in more than 150 years.
