The White House formally asked Congress on Tuesday to claw back more than $9 billion in federal funds that lawmakers had already approved for foreign aid and public broadcasting, seeking to codify spending cuts put forward by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

The request includes blocking funding to combat HIV/AIDS and for contributing to the World Health Organization and providing media services to U.S. consumers.

President Donald Trump asked lawmakers to cut more than $9 billion in funding for the Public Broadcasting Service, National Public Radio and foreign aid from this year’s budget, an attempt to write into law some of the so-called “DOGE cuts” initiated by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Its assessment comes a day after key Trump ally Elon Musk blasted the bill as a "disgusting abomination," giving fresh support to Republican deficit hawks who have been pushing back against the measure.
